The race to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2027 is entering its final stages, with Sofia increasingly viewed as the frontrunner ahead of Burgas. While no official decision has yet been announced by Bulgarian National Television (BNT) and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), industry observers and Eurovision fans believe the capital currently holds the strongest position.
The host city selection began with four Bulgarian candidates—Sofia, Burgas, Plovdiv and Varna. Following an initial evaluation of venue suitability, accommodation capacity, transport infrastructure and operational readiness, Plovdiv and Varna were eliminated, leaving Sofia and Burgas to compete for the right to host Europe’s biggest music event.
Why Sofia Is Considered the Favourite
Although the official evaluation remains confidential, Sofia is widely regarded as the safer choice from a logistical perspective.
The capital offers Bulgaria’s largest international airport, the country’s only metro system, the highest concentration of hotel accommodation and extensive experience hosting major international events. Its proposed venue, Arena Sofia, already meets many of the technical requirements needed to stage Eurovision and has successfully hosted concerts, sporting events and large-scale television productions.
Another advantage is that many of the institutions involved in organising the contest, including Bulgarian National Television (BNT) and several government ministries, are based in Sofia, making coordination significantly easier.
Burgas Still Presents a Strong Bid
Despite Sofia’s perceived advantage, Burgas remains firmly in the race.
The Black Sea city has impressed organisers with its modern arena, strong tourism infrastructure and unique coastal setting. Hosting Eurovision by the sea would offer fans a very different experience compared with recent editions and could showcase Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast to millions of viewers worldwide.
Burgas has also received strong public backing, with many Eurovision fans expressing support for a host city that would combine the contest with beaches, seaside events and a relaxed festival atmosphere.
No Official Decision Yet
Representatives from the European Broadcasting Union have already visited both finalist cities as part of the evaluation process, inspecting venues, transport links, accommodation and supporting infrastructure.
While speculation continues across Eurovision media and fan communities, no official winner has been selected. Neither BNT nor the EBU has confirmed reports suggesting one city is ahead of the other, and the final decision will be based on a comprehensive assessment of technical, financial and operational requirements.
An Announcement Expected Soon
With preparations for Eurovision Song Contest 2027 continuing at pace, the announcement of the host city is expected in the coming weeks.
Whether the contest heads to the bustling streets of Sofia or the seaside atmosphere of Burgas, Bulgaria is preparing to welcome thousands of Eurovision fans, international delegations and media representatives for what will be the country’s first time hosting the world’s largest live music competition.
Until an official announcement is made, Sofia appears to be the favourite, but Burgas remains a serious contender, meaning the race is still very much alive.
